Intersports U15 Blue 2 - 0 Canvey Island Youth U15 Yellow
Canvey Island Youth U15 Yellow were beaten 2-0 by Intersports U15 Blue in the Chelmsford Youth Football League U15 Cup Final at Aveley FC’s Mill Field on Wednesday night.
The match was an attack-minded, end to end affair from the start, with neither side wasting an opportunity to get the ball forwards quickly in search of a goal.
However, it wasn’t until the 10th minute that Intersports were able to create the first genuine chance of the evening. Max Fewster collected the ball on the right, dribbling through the Canvey defence and into the area before shooting narrowly wide of the top corner.
Three minutes later Canvey had a chance of their own when Jack Macal found himself in possession on the half way line on the Gulls’ right wing. Macal played a perfectly weighted ball to the opposite flank which was met Max Saul, although having successfully chipped the onrushing goalkeeper he could only watch as his effort drifted wide.
Canvey goalkeeper Jayden Powell kept the scores level in superb fashion on 18 minutes when pacey forward Joe Markham sprung the offside trap to run clean through on goal. Powell came off of his line and managed to stop Markham’s goalbound shot when it seemed a goal was inevitable.
Markham however didn’t have to wait long for another opportunity, this time putting Intersports in front. A shot from top yards was destined for the top corner before Jayden Powell leapt to tip the ball onto the underside of the crossbar. However, while the Gulls defence had switched off to the danger, Markham followed the shot in and slotted past Powell from close range.
Intersports doubled their advantage three minutes into the second half when a through ball found Thomas Cantwell. He was able to run the ball into the area and shoot across goal from the right, his shot nestling into the bottom corner.
Substitute Michael Reed had a good chance to pull a goal back on 55 minutes after a scramble in the penalty area was eventually put behind for a Canvey corner. The ball was whipped into the back post and found the head of Reed, although he steered his effort the wrong side of the post.
Canvey had the ball in the net on 57 minutes when Jack Macal challenged goalkeeper Matthew McSweeney in the air, winning the ball for Max Saul to finish from close range. However, the celebrations were cut short as the assistant referee’s flag was already raised for offside.
The Gulls pushed hard for the remainder of the match for a goal that would put them back in with a shout, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be for Tony Matthews’ side.
Intersports created late chances through Jack Sawyer who hit the post and Jai Felstead who flick a shot over the bar in acrobatic fashion, but in the end it mattered not as they went on to lift the cup.
