Canvey Island Youth U13's Yellow 1 - 3 Leighwood United U13's Black

Canvey Island Youth U13's Yellow finished their season as runners-up in the Southend & District Junior Sunday League U13 League Cup Final, losing 3-1 to Leighwood United U13's Black at Roots Hall on Sunday.

The Gulls performed admirably against a team three divisions higher than themselves, but despite playing well were beaten by a good Leighwood United side.

Canvey took the lead on 11 minutes when powerful forward Samuel Toyin-Adebanjo broke down the left before drilling a ball into the area. The striker proceeded to follow the ball into the area with a determined run, hammering the loose ball past goalkeeper Samuel Harris to score his 56th goal of the campaign.

The scores were levelled five minutes later when a lobbed shot from Roshaun Baxter from the corner of the penalty area on the left had just enough elevation to beat Adam Burns. The keeper managed to get his fingertips to the ball but couldn't keep it from creeping in at the far post.

Leighwood took the lead less than two minutes into the second half when a good cross from the right found the run of Isaac Volk inside the six yard box. Volk couldn't miss and duly slammed the ball high into the roof of the net to put his side ahead.

The young Gulls were then awarded a penalty on 39 minutes when the assistant referee spotted a handball inside the area by a Leighwood defender. McKenzie Davidson stepped up and struck his spot kick high towards goal, but goalkeeper Samuel Harris guessed right and shuffled to his left to make the save.

The cup was secured for Leighwood on 46 minutes when George Debenhem broke his way into the area and rifled a shot across goal and into the top corner.

Despite falling to defeat, this will definitely be a season to remember for the team after winning their league title and reaching two cup finals.
