The Gulls dominated the opening 45 minutes in terms of possession, and took the lead on the half hour mark through Leon Gordon. Danny Heale unleashed a tremendous effort which crashed against the crossbar, looping up in the air, and landing onto the head of Gordon to score apply the simple finish. Canvey thought the lead had been doubled soon afterwards, although Alex Rhodes was flagged offside having found the back of the net.
The Gulls started the second half as they finished the first, and Alex Rhodes and half time substitute Jay Curran both had efforts well saved by Wingate 'keeper Bobby Smith early on. Canvey had the ball in the again when Danny Heale beat Smith from after connecting with a right wing cross, but Jay Curran tapped the ball over the line and the goal was correctly ruled out as Curran was in an offside position. Canvey were almost made to rue this chance when Wingate hit the post, but The Gulls survived the scare which would have produced a harsh goal given Canvey's dominance.
However, with the final whistle looming, some good passing football saw Jay Curran sprint through on goal and slot into the bottom corner of the net to ensure the 3 points were put beyond doubt.
