Canvey Island 1
J. Hallett (45)
Aveley 1
T. Russell (90)

Canvey Island won through to the 3rd round of the Alan Boon League Cup after a penalty shoot out victory over Aveley at Park Lane.

A goal in the second minute of stoppage time from Millers’ Tony Russell saw the score-line finish 1-1 at full time and force a shoot-out after Gulls had lead thanks to Jason Hallett’s goal on the stroke of half time.

Canvey though held their nerve converting 4 of their 5 spot kicks with Aveley missing two to seal a place in the next round.

On a cold night, Canvey were the better side during the first half.

On 11 minutes, Antonio Gonnella saw an intelligent lob drop wide of the post and then two minutes later Jason Hallett showed good strength to hold the ball up and play in Leon Gordon but his shot was saved well by Dave Hogan who turned the ball aside for a corner.

Aveley’s defence looked susceptible to the long ball and Hallett and Jay Curran gave them plenty to think about at times during the first period.

Michael Alaile volleyed over from a Gonnella corner on 20 minutes but the first half saw very few genuine scoring opportunities.

Aveley rarely tested Andre Foster who was making his first competitive start in goal for Canvey and Chris Moore and Alaile generally kept the Aveley front pairing of Ellis Remy and Sherwin Stanley quiet.

A dull half looked set to end goal-less until Gonnella’s superb pass set Hallett free down the left hand side of the penalty area on the stroke of half time and the striker calmly guided his shot past Hogan and into the net.

It was Hallett’s last action of the game as he was substituted at half time and replaced by Danny Heale.

The second half was rather uneventful until the last few minutes. Canvey shaded possession but couldn’t find the second goal whilst Aveley at times threatened but failed to force Foster into any worthy saves.

Remy dragged a shot wide of the far post on 53 minutes after a left wing cross fell to him and then a shot was curled over the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area with 5 minutes remaining.

It looked like Canvey would edge through until in the second minute of injury time, Russell got to a corner at the near post just before Foster to head home.

The whistle blew almost immediately for full time and under the new rules of the competition the game immediately went to a penalty shoot out.

Robbie King missed his kick for Canvey with Daniel Francis scoring for Aveley but Gulls restored parity with Heale converting his kick and then Remy lashing his penalty high over the crossbar.

When Leon Gordon confidently scored for Canvey and Foster got down brilliantly to turn Luke Stanley’s kick around the post, Gulls took a crucial lead.

Curran scored for Canvey with Reece Morgan converting for Aveley to leave Ashley Dumas with the responsibility of taking Gulls through to the next round and this he did in emphatic style, placing his kick beyond Hogan.

Canvey now await the draw for the third round.
