A goal from former Brentwood player Ryan Edgar in the last seconds of the game gave the Gulls a draw on a wet night at the Prospects Stadium.
Brentwood featured former Canvey players Frankie Everett and Greg Cohen in their starting line up but it was Gulls who started brightly with Bradley Woods Garness seeing a shot blocked on the goal-line and then firing over after some clever dribbling had worked him an opportunity.
Brentwood gradually settled and former Concord forward Sherwin Stanley broke through the Canvey defence on 19 minutes but fired tamely at Gulls’ keeper Ashlee Jones.
Canvey did create some opportunities with Danny Heale firing over and Jay Curran then seeing a header saved well by keeper Elliot Justham.
Woods Garness got on the end of a superb right wing cross by Tarkan Mustafa but miscued his header wide.
Neil Cousins was then denied twice by decent reaction saves from Jones before Brentwood took the lead just before the half hour mark.
Canvey were exposed by an attack down the left wing and the ball was laid back to Conor Witherspoon who guided a low shot beyond Jones from the edge of the penalty area and into the net.
Witherspoon tested Jones again with a low drive that the keeper pushed to safety just before half time.
Canvey made 5 changes at half time but continued to lack cohesion in their play.
It took them until the 68th minute before they created a decent opportunity with Kirk Hudson seeing a shot deflected just wide of the far post after a promising run towards goal.
Gulls created numerous chances during the final 10 minutes but their finishing often lacked composure.
Edgar fired just wide from 20 yards and then saw a bullet of a shot from the edge of the penalty area narrowly clear the crossbar.
The best chance fell to substitute Eddie Hart who broke clear of the Brentwood defence in injury time but despite rounding Justham he could only fire into the side netting.
It looked like the result would end in Brentwood’s favour but with virtually the last kick of the game Edgar found space in the penalty area, turned and drilled a low shot beyond Justham and into the corner of the net to draw Canvey level.
The whistle blew seconds later to bring the match to a conclusion.
Gulls face another Ryman One North side on Saturday when Heybridge Swifts visit the Prospects Stadium.
