Match Report
Ryman Premier League - 2012/2013
Concord Rangers 3
OG (8), H. Elmes (20), J. White (86)
Canvey Island 0

A poor performance at a soaking wet Aspect Arena saw the Gulls fall to a disappointing 3-0 defeat away to 10-man Concord Rangers.

Having held off for most of the day, the rain started to fall upon kick off to create a slippery playing surface which both sides took time to adapt to.

However, the hosts settled into the match better and took the lead after only eight minutes. Strikr Harry Elmes shot hit the outstretched leg of former-Concord defender Ashley Miller, deflecting the ball into the back of the net leaving 'keeper Ashlee Jones with no chance.

The lead was doubled on 20 minutes when Jones failed to hold Ade Osifuwa's squared ball across the face of goal. Steve King's initial shot was blocked on the line, but the ball fell kindly for Harry Elmes who slotted home from close range.

Two minutes later Canvey nearly got a goal back through Bradley Woods-Garness. James Hawes did well to hold possession on the edge of the area before finding Woods-Garness, but his shot struck the post after catching a slight deflection off of a defender.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men on 23 minutes when Nicky Cowley was shown a straight red card having lunged in with a dangerous challenge on Kevin Dobinson.

Tony Stokes dropped back into midfield leaving Harry Elmes up front on his own for the Beachboys.

Canvey had the better of the half after the red card, but were lacking quality in their final ball and therefore struggled to make the man advantage count.

Their best chance before half time fell to Kevin Dobinson who connected with his head from a left wing cross, but his effort was saved low down by Tom Lovelock who collected the ball at the second attempy before Louis Dennis could latch onto the rebound.

With Canvey trailing by two goals at the break it was hoped that the Gulls would come out all guns blazing in search of an early goal after the restart. However, despite having plenty of possession they failed to make an impact on a solid Concord defence.

Concord had the ball in the net in the opening minute of the second half, but Tony Stokes effort was ruled out for offside.

Substitutes took place for both sides as Steve Tilson attempted to get his side back in the match and Danny Cowley looked to preserve his lead.

Billy Coyne replaced the injured Steve King for the home side who later brought Jerome Walker on for Ade Osifuwa, while Harrison Chatting and Danny Heale entered the match in place of James Hawes and Ashley Miller.

With Canvey pushing forward as the match edged towards it's conclusion, James White made the points safe for Concord. Having initially brought the ball out of midfield, White was on hand to steer the ball home at the back post, although Ashlee Jones will be disappointed that he was unable to make a save with the ball bouncing over him.

Former-Canvey striker Jason Hallett came on in place of Harry Elmes as the match entered injury time, and Bradley Woods-Garness nearly pulled on back for the Gulls with a powerful effort from outside of the box that Lovelock did well to keep his eyes on and parry.

The full time whistle sounded soon afterwards to secure a deserved victory for the Beachboys and that will leave Canvey feeling that they gave a poor account of themselves after some positive results of late.
