Manager Danny Heale handed a start to triallist winger Kojo Awotwi who played against the Gulls last season for VCD Athletic whilst on loan from Welling United.
The substitute bench featured another winger who will be slightly more familiar to Canvey supporters in Alex Rhodes. The left-sided player made 93 appearances and scored 22 goals for the club between 2010-2012 and is attempting to return to playing after a break from the game.
Leigh Ramblers took the lead on 10 minutes when a ball down the left found Ben Munday who looked up and placed an accurate shot across goal and into the bottom corner.
The Olympian League side looked good value for their lead until the 39th minute when Canvey pulled level. Tony Stokes sent over an excellent cross from the right to the back post where Jake Gordon was on hand to score.
The Gulls scored again three minutes later with Stokes the provider once again. This time the influential attacker crossed low from the opposite wing for Mitchell Gilbey to turn home from close range.
Canvey had several chances to add to the scoring after the break but a combination of some fine goalkeeping and committed defending kept the Gulls at bay.
The closest Canvey came to a third goal was in the 88th minute when a low ball from the right by Mitchell Gilbey was steered towards goal by Tony Stokes but his shot hit the top of the crossbar.
