Bostik North - 2017/2018
Canvey Island 0
Witham Town 2
T. Corlett (21), S. Ashford (90)

Canvey Island were knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup at the first hurdle, losing 2-0 to fellow Bostik North side Witham Town at The Frost Hire Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Gulls played right into Witham’s hands for the majority of the match, launching long ball forwards against their much physically taller opposition and failing to make goalkeeper Lewis Moore make a save all afternoon.

There were two new faces in the Canvey starting XI, with 19-year-old former-Gillingham goalkeeper Henry Newcombe joining as cover for the injured Conor Gough. Also making his debut was 22-year-old midfielder George Craddock who has previously played for East Thurrock United and most recently Braintree Town.

Both starting XI’s included familiar faces to their opponents, with Witham’s Lewis Moore, Usman Adeniji and John Watson all having played for The Gulls in the past. Ryan Charles meanwhile started on the wing for Canvey having joined from Witham in the summer.

Canvey created a couple of half chances in the opening exchanges, with Ashley Dumas volleying wide from a Ryan Charles corner on eight minutes. Soon afterwards James Walker had an overhead kick saved by Lewis Moore following a left wing cross by Sam Collins.

The visitor’s first chance came on 16 minutes when striker Timothy Monsheju met a right wing cross with a flick on header at the near post which Henry Newcombe was alert to and managed to save.

Witham took the lead on 21 minutes when Ashley Dumas conceded a free kick in the left back position, picking up a yellow card for pulling back an opponent. Elliot Ronto delivered an excellent ball into the box which Tyler Corlett rose to powerfully head home from 10 yards.

Both teams came close to adding to the scoring before the end of the half, with George Craddock having a shot from the edge of the area deflect narrowly wide before Timothy Monsheju curled wide for Witham from a similar position.

The second half took a while to get going, with Witham containing Canvey comfortably for the opening period.

The golden chance came on 69 minutes when substitute David Knight got to the touchline on the left and sent a low ball across the face of goal. George Sykes missed with an attempted flick but the ball continued to James Walker. However, the unmarked forward fluffed his lines and failed to tuck the ball home into an empty net.

A minute later Knight raced through on goal himself, but his shot from the edge of the area went across goal and wide of the upright.

Witham sealed their victory in the second minute of injury time when Sam Ashford took advantage of a lapse in concentration from the Canvey defence and collected a ball into the box which he slotted past Henry Newcombe.
