Canvey Island’s Jekyll and Hyde season continued with a comprehensive 3-0 defeat against lowly Soham Town Rangers at The Frost Hire Stadium on Saturday.

Manager Danny Heale named the same starting XI and bench that beat Heybridge Swifts 3-0 on Tuesday night.

The 13th minute proved unlucky for Canvey as they fell behind in disappointing fashion. Ashley Dumas was unable to prevent Joe Carden’s low cross from coming in from the right wing. The ball was cleverly flicked on at the near post and found winger Callum Russell who was able to slot the ball into an empty net from close range.

It was 2-0 15 minutes later when a ball into the area from the right was missed by an attempted header from Frankie Merrifield, allowing the ball to bounce. Jon Kaye capitalised by getting up well at the front post and heading across goal, past Jack Giddens diving to his right and into the bottom corner.

The visitors continued to create chances, with Joe Carden proving a persistent threat in attack. On 37 minutes he surged past Elliott Warren and into the box, shooting across goal from the left of goal with an effort that seemed destined for the bottom corner. However, a superb sliding block at the crucial moment from Steve Sheehan prevented Connor’s shot from finding the target.

Carden came close again in the first minute of stoppage time, nipping in as Steve Sheehan as was attempting to shepherd a ball back to his goalkeeper. Carden flicked a shot past Jack Giddens who had come to meet the ball, but his effort went wide of the target.

He was involved once more in the final moments of the first half, sending over an excellent cross from the right and finding Jon Kaye, but his first time volley was miscued and went back across goal before being cleared.

The second half was a non-event, with Soham content to sit on their two goal advantage and Canvey lacking the ingenuity to break them down.

It was 31 minutes from the restart until either team created what could be described as a genuine chance. Steve Sheehan rose high at the front post following a Ryan Melaugh corner, but he was only to head over the bar from close range.

Substitute Ryan Charles was then presented with a chance from just inside the area on 79 minutes,  but under pressure from a defender he scuffed his shot into the ground and left Josh Pope with a comfortable save to make.

Soham’s victory was sealed with ten minutes to play when Ashley Dumas brought down Craig Gillies inside the area for a penalty. Callum Russell stepped up and sent Jack Giddens the wrong way from the spot for his second of the afternoon.

Russell could have completed his hattrick with two minutes remaining after Steve Sheehan failed to make contact with an attempted sliding interception. The winger raced towards goal and pulled the trigger from 18 yards, missing the top corner by a matter of inches with a powerful strike.
