Canvey Island were comprehensively beaten 4-1 away to fellow playoff-hopefuls Heybridge Swifts at The Aspen Waite Arena on Thursday night.

On a wet evening on a pitch that inevitably cut up as the match went on, the Gulls defended poorly and were duly punished by a clinical Swifts side.

Fresh from winning by the same scoreline against Witham Town on Saturday, manager Danny Heale named the same starting XI four the fourth consecutive match. Ryan Melaugh was unable to be involved after getting stuck at work, although there was also a place on the bench for under-18 player George Unwin.

The Heybridge side meanwhile included two former-Gulls in the shape of midfielders Harrison Chatting and recent signing Tambeson Eyong.

After a quiet opening period the home side took the lead in the 18th minute. Goalkeeper Henry Newcombe saw his attempted clearance charged down by Matthew Price, leaving the forward in possession out on the left wing with the keeper scrambling back into his areas.

Price advanced into the box before squaring for Harrison Chatting who finished with a delightful chip over Newcombe and just underneath the crossbar.

It was 2-0 a couple of minutes later when Chatting and Price combined again. This time it was Chatting’s turn to be the provider, sliding a ball through the Canvey defence for Price to run onto and finish across goal and into the bottom corner from the left.

Some good refereeing nearly allowed Heybridge to extend their advantage further on the stroke of half time after Steve Sheehan had slid in and fouled Joe Gardner on the edge of the area.

Having not really had a sniff in the first half, Canvey started the second half in a better fashion. On 50 minutes a punched clearance by goalkeeper Jake Jessup sat up nicely for Sam Collins to strike from 20 yards. His effort was blocked by a defender, with Ryan Charles unable to get the ball out from under his feet in time to convert the rebound before being tackled.

Danny Heale made a double change ten minutes into the restart, replacing Jake Pitty and George Craddock with Nathan Fox and Martin Tuohy.

The Gulls had a better chance soon afterwards when George Sykes broke through down the left, cutting the ball infield for Mitchell Gilbey who in turn kept it moving out to Nathan Fox. The defender sent over a good cross towards George Sykes which was flicked out of his path by Tambeson Eyong, but instead found Ryan Charles.

Charles flashed a low ball towards goal hoping for a touch, but instead Jake Jessup stuck out a leg to clear the danger.

Despite a positive start to the second half, Canvey fell further behind on 61 minutes with Chatting and Price combining once again. This time Chatting crossed low from the left to the edge of the area for Price to finish with a crisp finish into the bottom corner.

The game was put to bed two minutes later when Kreshnic Krasniqi played a ball through the Canvey defence which released Price, and this time the forward beat Henry Newcombe with a low shot from 20 yards to complete his hattrick.

Canvey pulled one back om 71 minutes after George Sykes was tripped having broken into the box from the left. Martin Tuohy stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to score into the bottom corner.

Things threatened to get interesting two minutes later when Sam Collins hit the post from 20 yards with Jake Jessup rooted to the spot. The rebound fell to George Sykes who seemed to be fouled inside the area, but this time the referee allowed play to continue.

This was as close as Canvey came to a comeback, with the home side seeing out the remainder of the match to avenge the 3-0 defeat they suffered at The Frost Hire Stadium back in January.
