Canvey Island secured their place in the Bostik North playoffs following a 3-1 win away to Mildenhall Town on Saturday.

Three goals in seven first half minutes saw the points return to Essex, with the Gulls recording their first away win in eight matches.

Manager Danny Heale made two changes from the side that were hammered by strugglers Norwich United during midweek, bringing Sam Collins and Ryan Charles into the side in place of George Craddock and Ryan Melaugh.

The home side started the brighter of the two, but as the match settled down Canvey started to make inroads.

On 14 minutes Martin Tuohy headed narrowly over from a cross, and soon after the same man had a low shot saved by goalkeeper Jake Hallett following some good work from Ryan Charles.

The Gulls opened the scoring on 21 minutes when an accurate through ball from George Sykes released Martin Tuohy, with the forward picking out the bottom corner with a neat finish.

The lead was doubled two minutes later with Sykes involved again. This time he made it past two opposition players before passing to Mitchell Gilbey who was in an acre of space. Gilbey kept his composure, nutmegging the goalkeeper and finding the back of the net.

It was 3-0 on 28 minutes when some skill from Ryan Charles presented him with a shooting opportunity. Jake Hallett managed to keep out Charles’ effort, but he could do nothing about the rebound which fell to Mitchell Gilbey to tap home his 19th of the season.

The home side gave themselves a chance of a comeback seven minutes into the second half when they reduced the arrears. Henry Newcombe was unable to hold onto the ball following a corner and presented an easy chance for Joshua Curry to score with a tap in.

They did have another chance late on when they found themselves in a one-on-one situation, but this time Henry Newcombe did well to pull off a fantastic save.

With Maldon & Tiptree losing 2-0 at home to Craig Edwards’ rejuvenated Cheshunt, the win for Canvey secured their playoff place which had looked under threat before kick off.
