Canvey Island begin a stint of home pre-season games on Saturday as they welcome Southern League Central Premier side Bishop’s Stortford to Park Lane.

Bishop’s Stortford are familiar opponents to the Gulls, with the Hertfordshire side being an Isthmian League outfit just two seasons ago. They won the title that season after a thrilling title race, earning promotion to Step 2 of the non league pyramid.

However, an unexpected allocation in the National League North, along with financial uncertainty off the pitch, meant that the Blues endured a difficult campaign in the 23/24 season, resulting in them being relegated back to Step 3.

They now face a fresh challenge as open a new chapter in the Southern League Central. Their pre season preparations were put on gold last Sunday, with their game against Hornchurch falling foul of the weather.

The Gulls meanwhile, got their pre season preparations off to the right start last Saturday, with a mostly trialist based side comfortably dispatching East Thurrock CFC by a score of 8-1 in Corringham.

Those same trialists will now look to impress alongside the first team, as manager Brad Wellmen continues to build his side for the upcoming campaign.
