Canvey Island made it two pre-season wins from two on Saturday, as they recorded a 1-0 over Southern League Central side Bishop’s Stortford at Park Lane.
Several first team players returned to the fold from the start for the Gulls, with trialists intermingled throughout both halves.
The Gulls found themselves having to defend their own half throughout much of the first 45 minutes, but made the first chance of the game in the 11th minute after a glancing header forced the visiting keeper into a decent reaction save at his far post.
Stortford were awarded a penalty five minutes later, but Bobby Mason was equal to the spot kick to keep the score goalless. The Canvey keeper did well to keep out a good free kick in the 25th minute, meaning he maintained his clean sheet at half time.
Into the second half, and a raft of changes for both sides saw the Gulls grow into the game as the momentum turned.
They grabbed the eventual winner on 58 minutes after it was Canvey's turn to be awarded a penalty.
Kane Gilbert stepped up, but this time it was Stortford's goalkeeper producing a good stop from the spot. He could do little to keep out the rebound though, tucked away comfortably by a trialist.
The Gulls could have made it two on 82 minutes, after good work from a trialist saw Kane Gilbert played into the box, but his snatched shot was blocked well by the visitors keeper.
The Gulls continue their pre season preparations on Tuesday night, as they welcome National League neighbours Southend United to Park Lane.
