Canvey Island take a step closer to the start of the season on Tuesday evening, as they host National League South side Aveley at the Steve Taxi's Stadium.
Our Opponents
The Millers come into this game ahead of what will be their sophomore season in the National League South.
Their remarkable rise from Isthmian North obscurity to National League South promotion contenders in the last few seasons cannot be ignored, with a clear ambition to take the club forward making them one of the most formidable sides to face in the county. Indeed, hot off the heels of two successive promotions, they made the National South playoffs last season, only narrowly falling at the first hurdle after defeat to Maidstone United.
A good deal of their success can be attributed to that of manager Danny Scopes, who has built a well organised squad, fluent in both a composed defence and an exciting attack, capable taking on many of the established clubs they face.
The Gulls last met the Millers back in the 22/23 Isthmian Premier playoffs, where a close fought affair at Park Lane went the distance - the visitors eventually going through after penalties.
The Gulls
The Gulls meanwhile, kept the wheels turning on their approach to the new campaign with a routine 3-0 win over Island neighbours Concord Rangers on Saturday.
All three goals were scored by trialists - something that'll give Brad Wellmen and Sammy Knott plenty of food for thought as they look to turn promising trialists into full time members of the squad.
Tuesdays test will represent a sterner test for the Gulls, though the higher ranking of their opponents won't phase them, as seen in the spirited outing against Southend United recently.
