Canvey Island begin their final quest for cup glory this season this Tuesday evening, entering the Essex Senior Cup at the 3rd round stage, with a trip to Essex Senior League side Buckhurst Hill their first hurdle.
Our Opponents
The Stags have established themselves as a solid Step 5 outfit in the last few seasons, following on from promotion from Step 6 in the 20/21 season - their first season in senior football. Since then, they've been a difficult team to overcome in the Essex Senior League, recruiting well and propping up promising players from the local area, as has been part of the clubs ethos in their existence.
They are currently 8th in the Essex Senior League table at the time of writing, with their last result seeing them grab a late draw at home to Ilford in the league on Friday evening, with the game finishing 2-2. They made it to this stage of the competition after winning away at fellow league side Barking 1-0 in the second round.
Manager Mark Williams has an efficient side able to compete on all fronts, as his side continue to push forward in the competition. Whilst they have quality across the park, their biggest ace comes from an effective strike force, with George Thompson and club stalwart Suley Zudhu having already bagged 15 goals between them this season.
Our last meeting with the Stags was in the 4th round of this contest last season, where an injury hit Gulls were defeated 2-1 at Myrak Park, with Louie Arrowsmith forcing an own goal to half the deficit, but the Gulls unable to force the equaliser needed in the 2nd half.
The Gulls are four times Essex Senior Cup winners, with their last triumph coming back in 11/12 season as they defeated Colchester United in the final at then Thurrock FC's Ship Lane ground.
The Gulls
Canvey meanwhile, will want to get back to winning ways after a disappointing 3-2 defeat in the league on Saturday at the hands of Chichester City.
Despite grabbing two goals through Ewan Sanchez and a Jaxon Brown penalty, the Gulls couldn't keep their opponents out at the back however, condemning them to another defeat at home, after a positive October in terms of results.
They are a different animal on their travels though, having won 5 out of their last 6 away from home in all competitions.
***
Yellow Army, we thank you again for your support for the boys on Saturday afternoon.
Whilst it was a disappointing result on the pitch, your backing for the team couldn't be called into question, and we have no doubt that we'll see plenty of you on the road once again as we aim for our last chance at cup success this season.
We wish all travelling a safe and easy journey to Buckhurst Hill.
Come on you Gulls!
