South East Essex faces South East London on Saturday as Canvey Island welcome Dulwich Hamlet to the Moviestarr Stadium for one of the last home games of the Isthmian League Premier season.
Our Opponents
The Hamlet have enjoyed a reasonably good season following their relegation from the National League South last year, with the club sitting in 10th place at the time of writing. They've fared better than their relegated counterparts Cheshunt and Concord Rangers, and have been pushing for playoffs to make an instant return to the National League South at the first time of asking.
A recent blip in form though has seen them trail away from the chasing pack, with it now looking highly unlikely that they'll make a claim for promotion this season. Those hopes were all but extinguished last Saturday, as they suffered a damaging 4-0 defeat at home to fellow promotion chasers Enfield Town.
Manager Hakan Hayrettin has had a big rebuild on his hands over the course of the season to assemble a side capable of competing again in the Isthmian League Premier, though the last few months have shown he has the right ingredients moving forward.
Talented younger hotshots such as Ryley Scott and Ademola Shokunbi parter alongside experienced non league names like Anthony Jeffery and Michael Chambers. Up front, the goalscorer prowess of Luke Wanadio and club stalwart Danny Mills are nothing to scoff at either.
We last met the Hamlet all the way back in August in our first away fixture of the season. On a hot summers evening in South London, a red card midway through the first half for Lordon Akolbire meant that the Gulls had their backs to the wall and, despite a goal from Joe Paxman restoring parity early in the 2nd half, the Gulls found themselves resoundingly beaten 4-1.
The Gulls
Canvey meanwhile, will want to make sure of their place in next seasons Isthmian League Premier on Saturday, as a setback against Lewes on Tuesday night means they are still 2 points from mathematical safety with 5 games remaining.
Despite controlling large portions of the game, the Gulls couldn't create much to test their visitors, meaning the suckerpunch of 2 late goals condemned them to another defeat at home.
They could be made safe without kicking a ball tonight however, with Margate the only team who could potentially catch them now. Should Margate drop points away at Potters Bar Town this evening (11/04), then the Gulls are safe for another season.
***
Yellow Army, we thank for your continued support as we enter the last few games.
This season hasn't been what we hoped for, but despite the lure of Champions League football on Tuesday evening, plenty of you still made yourselves heard at Park Lane to back the boys once again.
With just 3 home games remaining, we hope to see a healthy crowd see the boys off into the summer over the next few games, as we look to the future and (hopefully) another good season at Step 3 of the non league pyramid.
See you all on Saturday.
