Canvey Island return to Isthmian League action on Saturday afternoon, as they travel to the Bauvil Stadium to take on Chatham Town in another big fixture.
Our Opponents
The Chats are competing just their 2nd ever season at Step 3 of the Non League Pyramid, but they've certainly made a name for themselves after a fantastic debut season in the Isthmian Premier.
After winning the Isthmian League South East title the season before, they kept their charge up the divisions in fifth gear as they battled for the league title, eventually being made to settle for 2nd place after nipping the heels of eventual winners Hornchurch for much of the campaign. In the playoffs, they defeated Horsham at the Bauvil Stadium before losing out in the final to Enfield Town.
With a busy summer bolstering their squad, the Chats perhaps would have hoped for a better start to their league campaign, with the club sitting in 12th place after 6 league matches. Their last league encounter saw them held to a 2-2 draw at home to Hendon, though they fared better in the Emirates FA Cup the weekend after, scalping higher ranked Welling United 1-0 to set up a date with Slough Town in the 3rd Qualifying Round.
Manager Kevin Hake has on paper, one of the divisions most impressive squads, with big hitters joining in the summer. The likes of Sam Sene-Richardson, Stuart O'Keefe and Freddie Sears all stepped down to join established Chats favourites like Jamie Yila and Rowan Liburd, among others, to strengthen their promotion push. Also among their ranks is last seasons Canvey Player Of The Season, Bradley Sach, with the striker also making the switch to Kent in the summer - though he finds himself suspended for this fixture.
The Gulls met the Chats twice in the league last season, with Canvey winning 3-2 at Park Lane after a brace from Bradley Sach and a Conor Hubble goal, before losing 5-1 at the Bauvil Stadium - Jamie Salmon grabbing Canvey's consolation on the day.
The Gulls
Canvey meanwhile, also earned a place in the 3rd Qualifying Round on the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday afternoon, as they defeated Isthmian League North side Felixstowe & Walton United 2-0 at the Steves Taxis Stadium.
A brace from Finlay Dorrell in the 2nd half was enough to see the Gulls through after Bobby Mason had kept the visitors out with a 1st half penalty save, gifting the Gulls a date with Biggleswade FC in the next round.
In the league however, they are still with just the one win to their name, and will be itching to pick up points after they fell 3-2 to Dulwich Hamlet in their last league fixture, leaving them 2nd from bottom of the fledgling league table.
