Canvey Island will look to get back to winning ways on the road this Tuesday evening, as they contest another important match away at Hastings United in the Isthmian League Premier.
Our Opponents
The U's are competing their 3rd season back in the top flight of Isthmian football, having been promoted as Isthmian South East champions in the same season the Gulls also earned promotion to the division. After a solid two first seasons back at Step 3, they've endured a more challenging campaign thus far in the 24/25 season.
The departure of popular manager Chris Agutter to National League South side Worthing saw the U's having to start again assembling a squad. That task was given to former Eastbourne Borough manager Danny Bloor, but after a poor start to the season, he departed the club, with the batton now passed to former Ebbsfleet United and Aldershot Town manager Danny Searle.
His early tenure hasn't been plain sailing however, and despite a valuable 1-0 win against fellow basement battlers Bognor Regis Town just after Christmas, they are without a win in 2025, having lost 6 consecutive league games. They were close to taking a point away from home on Saturday in another of the sides orbiting the relegation zone, Cheshunt, only to succumb to a 92nd minute defeat as they went down 2-1.
With only just over half of the season completed however, the U's are not dead and buried yet, and Searle has the side to steer the club into calmer waters. Players like goalkeeper Louis Rodgers and defender Adam Lovatt form the spine of the side, defender Ollie Black has extended his loan from Worthing until the end of the season, and the goals of Davide Rodari will be crucial in their battle to beat the drop.
The two sides met twice in the league last season, with Canvey recording a 2-0 away win thanks to goals from Jamie Salmon and Elliott Ronto, before the two sides played out a goalless draw at Park Lane on the final day. They were due to meet at the start of January, only for the fixture to be frozen off.
The Gulls
Canvey meanwhile, will want to get back to winning ways themselves after falling short at Carshalton Athletic on Saturday.
Despite taking an early lead through Darren Foxley's first goal for the club, a red card for Jamie Salmon just before half time flipped the script, with the hosts capitalising to run our 2-1 winners against a 10-man Gulls.
Results around them however mean they maintain a six point gap above the drop zone. They'll hope their recent record against the U's will continue in this game, as they are currently undefeated since the two sides again shared a division, having won twice and drawn twice.
***
Yellow Army, thank you for your support again on the road this Saturday just gone. Whilst it was a setback to our recent turnaround in form, your support for the side remained until the end, and the squad greatly appreciates that.
This is another long midweek trip, but there have been many good midweek long hauls over the last two seasons. Let's hope that this game counts amongst one of them.
We wish all traveling a safe and easy journey down to Hastings.
