Canvey Island enter a 'make or break' February on Saturday, as they play host to league heavyweights Chatham Town at the Steves Taxis Stadium.
Our Opponents
The Chats were one of the pundits early favourites for promotion at the start of the campaign, though their sophomore Isthmian Premier season has proved more steady than spectacular so far, with the club adrift in midtable at the time of writing, 12 points from the playoff places .
Inconsistent form has seen their playoff challenge falter and they've only taken 6 points from their last 6 games, having won just twice. Their last league outing was two weeks ago, and it saw more red on their records as they were narrowly defeated 1-0 away at Potters Bar Town. They got back to winning ways on Tuesday though in the Quarter Final of the Velocity Cup, winning 3-2 away at Hashtag United.
Manager Kevin Hake still has plenty of talent in his side to keep momentum in the league however. Goalkeeper Joe Wright is a recent title winner with Hornchurch, the likes of Sid Nelson and Freddie Sears have Football League and even Premier League experience, the talented Jamie Yila marshals their midfield, and up front they have plenty of firepower in the likes of John Ufuah and Kareem Isiaka.
The two sides previously met in Kent back in September, where the Gulls ran out with an impressive 3-1 thanks to goals from Tom Stephen, Jaxon Brown and Ewan Sanchez.
The Gulls
Canvey meanwhile, will be desperately seeking points in their fight against the drop, after their 7th straight defeat on Tuesday, going down 1-0 to Cheshunt.
It was a damning defeat for the Gulls in a game against another side looking to get away from the relegation dogfight. They now start a busy February just a point above the drop zone, and will be hoping for a sharp turn in their fortunes as they also take on 3 of the sides below them in that time.
***
Yellow Army, thank you to all everyone who came out to back the team on Tuesday evening. The squad recognises that recent performances have not been good enough, and not what you've come to expect from a side competing at this level of the pyramid.
They greatly appreciate those have stuck behind them in a tough season however, where a multitude of issues have taken their toll, and will want to reward your loyalty with a much needed 3 points at home.
Get behind the team once again and let's hope this is the game where our fortunes change for the better.
Come on you Gulls!
