Canvey Island will look to steer further clear of the Isthmian Premier relegation zone on Saturday, as they host basement side Bognor Regis Town at the Steves Taxis Stadium.
Our Opponents
The Rocks are enduring a difficult season in the Isthmian Premier this year, with the side currently rooted to the bottom of the table, 16 points adrift of safety having only won 4 games all season. Their woes on the pitch saw long serving manager Robbie Blake leave his position, with new joint managers Michael Birmingham and Jamie Howell left to steer the side to safety.
It's not been plain sailing however, with their last win coming back on January 4th, as they came behind to defeat Dulwich Hamlet in a 7 goal thriller, but since then, they have picked up just 2 points from their last 6 games, seeing them slip further from safety. Their last result saw them comprehensively defeated at home to title chasing Billericay Town last Saturday - another harsh blow after picking up two draws previously.
Birmingham and Howell will now need to put their faith in their squad to pull a great escape and keep the club at Step 3. Players like Matt Burgess and Spencer Spurway are Portsmouth academy graduates, the presence of Ryan Hall between the sticks provides safety, and up front, both Dan Gifford and Jasper Mather have plenty of appearances and goals for the team in recent seasons, while top scorer Tommy Lee-Higgs has 19 goals this season in all competitions, despite their league standing.
The Gulls and the Rocks have already met once this season, with second half goals from Chris Harris and Finlay Dorrell seeing Canvey run out 2-1 winners in West Sussex.
The Gulls
Canvey meanwhile, suffered a setback in their mission to steer clear of the drop zone on Saturday, as they were defeated 2-1 away at Carshalton Athletic.
Despite taking the lead early in the first half through Darren Foxley, a red card for Jamie Salmon later in the half saw the Gulls reduced to 10 men - something the hosts capitialised on, as they flipped the script to inflict their first defeat on Canvey since 2012.
Canvey saw another key match against another relegation threatened side, Hastings United, postponed on Tuesday after a failed pitch inspection at Pilot Field. Results around them saw the gap between themselves and the drop zone cut to 5 points.
