Canvey Island suffered a disappointing defeat going down to a 1-0 loss against Potters Bar at Kings Langley's Orbital Fasteners Stadium.
After the excitement of winning the Essex Senior Cup against Hornchurch on Tuesday night this game was something of an anti-climax with neither side being at the top of their game.
Canvey edged a first half of few chances. Darren Foxley saw an effort deflected wide of the goal and then Elliott Ronto was fractionally over with a header from a left wing cross.
Bailey Stevenson tried his luck with an effort from long range that crashed off of the post and away to safety for the Scholars.
In the second half, Potters Bar were easily the better team as Canvey struggled to keep possession and create anything of note in front of goal.
They came more and more into the game and took the lead on 75 minutes when Joe Payne's left wing cross found Dylan Adjei-Hersey who stroked the ball into the far corner of the net beyond Bobby Mason.
Ronnie Henry had an effort cleared off of the line and Mason did superbly to stand up and deny the striker when he was clean through on goal as Potters Bar looked for a second goal to seal the victory.
Canvey had a great chance to equalise in the 93rd minute but substitute Denim Nnamudi saw his curling effort from just inside the penalty area drop inches wide of the far post.
Potters Bar held on for a 1-0 victory that keeps Gulls involved in the relegation dogfight although defeats for both Hendon and Hastings relieve the pressure on Canvey a little.
